Due to increased demand the National Association of Social Workers is extending its ethics consultation days and hours beginning January 5, 2015.

NASW’s Office of Ethics and Professional Review answers member’s questions on a variety of ethical issues. Questions can range from “Am I required to provide my client access to their records” to “Under what circumstances am I required to report abuse” and “Am I able to provide therapy electronically to a client in another state.”

Consultations were offered for only three hours each day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, NASW members wanted the association to expand the service.

“Although members have expressed that the ethics consultations are one of the most valued benefits of membership, some stated that the window of opportunity to receive them is somewhat narrow,” said NASW Director of Ethics and Professional Review Dawn Hobdy, MSW. “I’m excited that NASW will offer extended hours to better meet the requests of membership.”

Below is the consultation contact telephone number and new extended hours:

(800) 742-4089

Mondays 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm (ET)

Tuesdays 10:00 am – 1:00 pm (ET)

Wednesdays 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm (ET)

Thursdays 10:00 am – 1:00 pm (ET)

Please double check your AM and PMs. There might be extended hours but I’m not sure overnight is what you meant!

  2. I am glad to see the hours extended but feel it should be open M-F from 8-5PM. Being on the West Coast and having a full time private practice makes it difficult to match hours and get a call back that works for both parties. I also wish you could speak with someone immediately versus wait for a call back. I would happily sit on hold if it means I can talk with someone versus work in a call back. I hope it continues to improve.

  3. I know that when NASW Iowa members call and need help with an ethical dilemma that they are wrestling with, they are delighted and relieved to hear about this benefit of membership.

  4. Extending OEPR’s hours is an outstanding move. Not only is a critical resource expanded but additional hours, in addition, conveys the extent to which ethics is as central to our work. Just like social workers cannot practice without a professional relationship, competent practice cannot occur without a sound ethical base.

Maybe one day NASW will have a CHAT capability so that members can immediately get a preliminary consultation on their issue before moving to a formal process. We would be just like VERIZON!!!

    Good job.

  5. Thank you, NASW, for this wonderful service! I’ve been teaching Ethics for NASW for over a decade and can verify this service complements education in Ethics. Good work!
