The Maine Legislature on February 14 held a hearing on a bill to ban gay conversion therapy.

The National Association of Social Workers has long been against such therapy, saying it does not change the sexual identity of people who are LGBT and harms their mental well-being.   NASW Maine Chapter Executive Director Lori Gramlich testified at the hearing.

“Conversion therapy is nothing short of child abuse,” Gramlich said. “It violates the very tenants of the social work profession and the core of our Code of Ethics.”

NASW and the NASW Maine Chapter have also joined with other mental health organizations on a Human Rights Campaign letter in support of the bill. Here is a copy of the HRC letter.

Contact the NASW Maine Chapter for more information on the status of this letter.
