New York (CNN.com) - Linda Garcia-Rose, a social worker who counsels post-traumatic stress disorder patients in an office three blocks from where the World Trade Center stood, called the flight an “absolute travesty.” Watch the White House respond to questions about the scare »
“There was no warning. It looked like the plane was about to come into us,” she said. “I’m a therapist, and I actually had a panic attack.”
Garcia-Rose, who works with nearly two dozen patients ages 15 to 47, said she was inundated with phone calls from patients.
“They’re traumatized. They’re asking ‘How could this happen?’ They’re nervous. Their anxiety levels are high,” she said.
Garcia-Rose said she is considering filing a class-action suit against the government for sanctioning the plane’s unannounced flight.
“I believe the government has done something really wrong,” she said. - Quote from Official who OK’d N.Y. flyby accused of ‘felony stupidity‘

Slumdog Millionaire hires social worker to protect child actress
April 22nd, 2009
A trust established by the makers of Best Picture Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire told EW via a statement today that it was looking after the welfare of the film’s child stars. The statement from the Jai Ho Trust comes in the wake of reports that the father of 9-year-old Slumdog actress Rubina Ali allegedly tried to sell his daughter for more than $300,000 when reporters from Britain’s News of the World newspaper made the offer as part of an undercover sting operation. Ali’s father, Rafiq Qureshi, has denied that he intended to sell his daughter. Indian police are currently investigating the matter.
The Jai Ho Trust (which is in part supported by Slumdog director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson) issued the following statement:
The Jai Ho Trust was established with financial support from the filmmakers of Slumdog Millionaire to support the welfare of child stars of the film. The trust is in regular contact with Rubina Ali and her family and has hired a social worker to assist in looking after her welfare and that of her co-star [Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail].

NASW’s Legal Counsel, Carolyn Polowy was quoted in today’s USA Today article on school strip searches
April 16th, 2009
From “Strip search review tests limits of school drug policy” USA Today, April 16, 2009
“The National Association of Social Workers — joined by the National Education Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children — sides with April Redding in a court filing. “Social science research demonstrates that strip searches can traumatize children and adolescents and result in serious emotional damage,” they say, citing studies in educational and legal journals.
Carolyn Polowy, lawyer for the social workers association, says in an interview that adolescents — typically shy and awkward about how they look — are particularly sensitive to being forced to expose their bodies.
“We’re sympathetic with the schools, but a strip search is sort of the capital punishment of searches,” Polowy says. “It should be rare, if at all.”
Hallmark debuts movie about a brave social worker during the Holocaust
April 9th, 2009
Hallmark will debut “The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler” on Sunday April 19 at 9/8c. Based on the true story of a social worker who saved 2,500 Jewish children during the German occupation of Poland, the movie examines how she risked her own life to save thousands of others. As a Catholic social worker, Sendler gained access to the Warsaw ghetto and was angry at the conditions and treatment she was witnessing. Hallmark documents that “at great personal risk she devised extraordinary schemes to sneak children by Nazi guards, bringing them out in ambulances, suitcases, and even wheelbarrows.”
Sendler created an underground network of helpers, mostly women, who were willing to risk death and imprisonment to save the lives of innocent children. She was eventually caught by the Gestapo and imprisoned for three months, but didn’t release any information about her secret life. Irena Sendler never sought recognition but was a hero and this film documents her passionate, dangerous, and unknown path to dramatically alter the course of many lives during the Holocaust.
NASW commends the Hallmark channel for providing an insightful and educational look into a social worker who few know about today, but who deserves recognition.
