Talk to Your Members of Congress during District Work Period

Apr 7, 2017

Congress’ April District Work Period spans the weeks of April 10-17, 2017. Now is the perfect time to talk to your Members of Congress about social work priorities while they are home in their districts.

You can set up a meeting in their district or state office or attend a town hall meeting. You can contact their district or state office to find out what events they have planned during the district work period.

Some key issues you can bring up during the district work period are:

  1. Make sure that the budgets for Fiscal Year 2017 and Fiscal Year 2018 prioritize programs that serve low-income individuals and families. You can see our statement about President Trump’s budget on our social work blog.
  2. We must remain vigilant, and prepared to strongly oppose any attempts to amend the Affordable Care Act by introducing ill-advised provisions such as eliminating Essential Health Benefits and block-granting Medicaid.
  3. Reject immigration proposals, including funding cuts, which would go to expanding detention and other punitive measures. Especially reject proposals that would separate families.

If you need help finding out how to reach your Members of Congress during the District Work Period, you can find their contact information on our Action Alert Web site.

In her powerful memoir Building a Life Worth Living, Marsha M. Linehan takes readers on her journey from being a suicidal teenager to a noted psychologist. Linehan created the ground-breaking Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which was originally developed to treat Borderline Personality Disorder. Today, experts say the DBT method is used to treat a broad range of mental health challenges from anger management to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
