Being named an NASW Social Work Pioneer® is one of the profession’s highest honors, and this June, the honor arrived twice over. With the recognition ceremony shifting from its traditional fall date to coincide with the NASW National Conference, the NASW Foundation had the rare opportunity to honor two classes of Pioneers in a single evening: the 2025 and 2026 classes, together in Washington, D.C.
A Community Built on Legacy
The Pioneer Program has spent decades building a community of more than 700 social workers whose leadership, innovation, and service during their careers have strengthened communities, advanced the profession and inspired generations of practitioners. Their work has shaped the profession through clinical practice, academia, policy, and community organizing. Each new class joins the ranks of those who came before, adding to a story still being written.
By recognizing these trailblazers, NASW strengthens its role as the leading resource for social workers while advancing public understanding of the profession’s impact on individuals, families, and communities.
The Foundational Leaders Behind the Pioneers Program
The Pioneers Program would not be possible without the schools of social work and professional associations that have invested in its success, including this year’s event, with the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work leading the way.
These foundational leaders support the Pioneers Program for reasons that extend far beyond a single evening of recognition.
