Celebrate National Women’s Health Week, May 8-14

Apr 20, 2011

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Women’s Health has designated May 8 – 14 as the 12th annual celebration of National Women’s Health Week (NWHW).  During this week, communities, businesses, government, health organizations, and other groups come together to promote women’s health.  The theme for 2011 is “It’s Your Time.”  It emphasizes the National Women’s Health Week goal of empowering women to make their health a top priority.  The theme also encourages women to take steps to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases.

The signature event of the week, National Women’s Check-up Day, will be held on Monday, May 9, 2011.

During 2011, HHS is seeking to increase the impact of NWHW by expanding the number of activities that occur during the month of May. You and your organization can help make this happen.  Some ways for you to do so include sponsoring a display table, health fair, educational workshop, or fitness event. You can partner with a local health provider to offer health screenings, such as blood pressure checks, pap tests, mammograms, diabetes or HIV testing.  Organizations that add their events to the online activity registry are considered NWHW partners and will be able to order free promotional and educational materials to support their efforts. The activity registry is open now.  Participation is free.  You will find more information on NWHW, registering your event, and ordering materials for 2011 at www.womenshealth.gov/whw.
