House Farm Bill Does Not Include SNAP Benefits

Jul 12, 2013

On July 11, we summarized the status of the House version of the Farm Bill.  Many Democrats opposed that version because the SNAP cuts were too severe in their view, while some Republicans objected because they believed the cuts were not severe enough.  Recently, consideration of this measure became even more contentious.  The House has indeed passed a Farm Bill that does not include SNAP, also referred to as Food Stamps.

The prospect we mentioned in our last post will now come to pass: a showdown between the House version, with no funding for SNAP, and the Senate version, which includes a food stamps appropriation.  Some Members of Congress, particularly Democrats, believe there is no way to reconcile the two measures.

NASW will continue to update our members as this bill progresses through the legislative process.
